It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved bandmate, drummer, and friend, David Orant, who lost his battle with cancer on January 31, 2026.

Dave had a deep love of music that was truly infectious. Anyone who knew him understood his passion for live music—he attended well over 1,000 concerts throughout his life, always seeking connection and inspiration in the experience of hearing musicians perform. That same passion fueled his drumming and vocals in American Religion, where he poured his heart into documenting his joys and struggles through our songs.

Behind his kit, Dave was the steady heartbeat of our band—humble, mysterious, and powerful. He battled social anxiety but found his voice through the thump of his drums, letting his presence be felt in every beat. His musical journey spanned decades, from his early lessons with Mikey Snyder of The A's, to marching bands, orchestras, and even a stint with the Utah Symphony.

But above all, Dave was a wonderfully loving and supportive father to David Jr., Carter, and Ashlee, a devoted husband to JannaLee for over 27 years, and a loyal friend to so many. His kindness, humor, and genuine spirit touched everyone who knew him.

His presence in American Religion will be deeply missed. We are forever grateful for the music we made together and the memories we shared.

Rest in peace, Dave. Thank you for everything.

—American Religion
